Album Notes
If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself. That could be the motto of Seattle-based quartet tart. Inspired by the wave of strong female artists who made a splash in the early 90's, these four women - all contributing songwriters and multi-instrumentalists - decided to join the ruckus. Self-taught, self-motivated and self-sufficient, they've managed to score high profile slots on the Rockrgrl and Bumbershoot festivals, self-released an album and EP and toured the west coast. They're ready to take all that to the next level with the release of their brand new self-titled album.

Sisters Sarah, Julia, and Anna began harmonizing as children. In their early twenties, they taught themselves guitar and bass to accompany their voices. New York native Lisa Van Arsdale began drumming in 1993 and after honing her abilities with a series of acts, she picked up the guitar and began writing songs. The Landa sisters and Van Arsdale connected in Seattle in 1998, and tart was formed.

In January of 2000, tart released its first full-length record. The album titled Cat Porn, balances powerful, steady rhythms with intricate melodies, topped by a layering of vocals that creates an ear-friendly texture of sound. Cat Porn gained tart attention in the Seattle music community, and after playing various showcases at the Crocodile Cafe and the OK Hotel, they were invited to participate in the kick off the first Rockrgrl Music Conference.

tart's follow-up to Cat Porn, the four song EP titled I feel pretty, so what? is a confident study of subtle aggression. Using music as a way to confront feelings of disenchantment with relationships, work, and society in general, the EP showcased the strides the members have made as musicians and their ability to express the darker sides of their natures.

After a successful tour down the west coast, tart entered the studio with veteran producer Tucker Martine (Carrie Akre, the Sick Bees, Orbiter.) The result is tart, a collection of 11 smart new songs that find the band at the top of its game. The ladies celebrate electrically - plugging in, turning up and challenging listeners not to consider their message.
