Album Notes
The debut album "From All Directions" by the Tatiana Mayfield Quintet and the Erskine Hawkins Band is a collaboration record that the jazz world has been yearning for. Tatiana and Erskine met at the University of North Texas where they both studied and played together as part of school curriculum ensembles as well as on their own. Through this, they created a strong musical bond and have been performing together ever since. Therefore, this collaboritve project was only natural for them to do. They both exhibit a great amount of creativity in their styles and arrangements throughout the album. On this album, one will hear an array of styles from Swing and Blues, to Latin, Gospel, and Contemporary. It's an amazing blend of styles that all people can enjoy from young to old!

Smooth, refreshing, unique and beautiful are how many have described the voice of Tatiana Mayfield, a 22-year old jazz vocalist from Fort Worth, Texas. Miss Mayfield studied vocal jazz in the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas and was a member of the Jazz Singers I ensemble. She is also featured on the famous University of North Texas Two-O' Clock Lab Band CD released this year (2009). She recently received the “Outstanding Performance” award in the college “Jazz Vocal Soloist” category in DownBeat magazine’s June 2009 Student Awards issue. In addition, she also received the award for “Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Jazz Studies” from the University of North Texas jazz department. Other awards and achievements in her career so far include receiving a National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) Award for Jazz Voice in 2006 and performing on the “Showtime At The Apollo” television show in 2004.

Erskine Hawkins III of Grand Prairie, Texas is known for his suave and soulful piano/keyboard skill and sound. The 22-year old has been performing with various local and national artists in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex since 2004. He got his start playing in church as a child, and has performed with national gospel recording artist Myron Butler in Dallas, Texas in addition to Tamela Mann, Martha Manuzzi, and Tonex. He is currently a pianist at the world known "Potter's House" church in Dallas, Texas lead by the Bishop T.D. Jakes. Mr. Hawkins studied jazz piano in the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas and participated in their famous lab bands as well as play for the Jazz Singers I ensemble.

See what jazz journalist Scott Yanow had to say about it!

This enjoyable CD is split between two overlapping groups. Both singer Tatiana Mayfield and keyboardist Erskine Hawkins are students at the University of North Texas State, but they already possess surprisingly mature styles and strong musicianship.

The two halves of this CD both start with brief versions of “What's On?” which is essentially a cute commercial for the recording. Six songs are performed by Tatiana Mayfield and her quintet. She has a very attractive voice, excellent elocution (one can always understand the words she sings), and her phrasing is quite appealing. Joined by a four-piece rhythm section that includes Hawkins on acoustic piano and guitarist Joel Cross (who takes quite a few worthy solos), she swings hard on “There Will Never Be Another You,” displays infectious phrasing and fine scat singing on “Baubles, Bangles And Beads,” and puts plenty of feeling into a fetching version of “Crazy He Calls Me.” Tatiana has a joyful spirit and obviously enjoys singing jazz. Her boppish version of “Cottontail” includes a lot of song quotes with Hawkins playing phrases from four songs during one chorus of his solo. Tatiana also performs “He's Coming My Way” and comes up with her own variations to “Peel Me A Grape.”

After another “What's On?,” the Erskine Hawkins band starts off with two instrumentals. “All Blues” has active electric bass playing from Nigel Rivers, a heated tenor solo by Sylvester Onyejialka, and fluent electric piano from Hawkins. “Roscoe Has Issues” is an original and thoughtful ballad. Tatiana joins the group for a delightful version of “Waters Of March” and adds some creative scatting to Wes Montgomery's “West Coast Blues” which also features with Hawkins' wailing organ. The band gets rockish during a fiery version of “Freedom Jazz Dance” which has funky electric bass, guitar and keyboard solos. The CD concludes with Tatiana returning for the heartfelt and soulful “Speak To My Heart.”

Overall, this is a very impressive debut from Tatiana Mayfield and Erskine Hawkins, two fine musicians who we will be hearing much more from in the future.
