Dear Abbey: the Music of Abbey Lincoln

by Teri Roiger

Abbey Lincoln's music is some of the most beautifully profound music of our time. "Teri Roiger is one of the few who truly comprehended what Abbey Lincoln did with time, timbre, and phrasing. Teri absorbed everything into her own individuality."

Album Notes
Abbey Lincoln's music captured my imagination and has inspired me over the past 20 years, and I feel compelled to keep her music alive and share her songs with you. I recorded this music with the brilliant pianist Frank Kimbrough, the ever swingin' drummer Steve Williams (with Shirley Horn for 15 years), and John Menegon who lays down the foundation with his solid, swingin' bass lines. The exceptionally modern alto sax player Greg Osby weaves his melodic vocabulary throughout five of Abbey's tunes, and guitarist Mark Dziuba brings a special bluesy element to Hey Lordy Mama, a blues co-written by Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone. This is a magical recording full of swing, sass, blues, and beauty!
