Album Notes
Slow Burn is a collection of original songs and jazz standards that draw from the jazz tradition but are played with a contemporary interpretation. It was recorded at IV Labs Studio, and mixed and mastered at Schwab Studio in Chicago. TBG is comprised of James Davis on trumpet, Alex Beltran on tenor sax, Joel Kelsey on bass, Lucas Gillan on drums, and Terry Bartolotta on guitar.

Suspicious Character

This uptempo song is based on an interlocking groove between the bass, drums, and guitar. The melody and harmony give an impression of a devious movie character.

Out of Nowhere

This song has been recorded by many jazz musicians over the years, but this version features a unique arrangement. The waltz feel and the interlude sections change the personality of this well-worn standard.

Downtown Strut

This shuffle is inspired by the music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and it gives an impression of a brisk walk through the Chicago Loop neighborhood.

Trumpeter James Davis is featured on this piece, and the title draws inspiration from the morning sunrise.

This energetic backbeat song provides a nice contrast in feel from the rest of the cd.

Slow Burn

Tenor player Alex Beltran is featured on this composition which is inspired by the music of John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner.

Guitarist and leader Terry Bartolotta is featured on this solo guitar piece. The beginning harmonies draw inspiration from the famous Puccini aria, Nessun Dorma.

This jazz standard has been recorded by many jazz musicians, but this version provides a fresh interpretation. The bossa nova and swing sections create a nice atmosphere for this beautiful Hoagy Carmichael melody.

Blues for Horace

This piece is dedicated to the legendary jazz musician/composer Horace Silver. His exciting hard bop style and unique voicings for horns provide the inspiration for this fast paced blues.
