Album Notes
The Allegheny Choirs – December 2, 2017 was recorded live in Shafer Auditorium under the direction of Ward Jamison. This concert features several works performed by the Allegheny College Chorus, Chamber Choir, Women’s Ensemble, Men’s Ensemble and College Choir.

The College Chorus, including students, Allegheny faculty, and Meadville community members, begin with “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” by Josef Haydn, accompanied by Kevin Dill on piano. Next they perform “Angels We Have Heard on High” by Paul Laubengayer followed by a Thurston Dart arrangement of Richard Dering’s “Dear Love, Be Not Unkind”. They end with “Early One Morning”, an arrangement of a traditional English song by Frank Ahrold.

The Chamber Choir then performs “Mon Coeur se recommande a vous” by Orlando Lassus and “Amor vittorioso” by Giovanni Gastoldi followed by “Dixit Maria” by Hans Leo Hassler, which epitomizes late-Renaissance choral writing. They finish with “Salmo 150”, composed by Ernani Aguiar, featuring Latin-American dance rhythms.

Rounding out the first half of the concert, the Women’s Ensemble performs the English carol “On Christmas Night” arranged by Morten Luvaas. They then dive into the Russian language with “Chorus of Peasant Girls” from Piotr Tchaikovsky’s opera “Eugene Onegin”. Next is Thomas Morley’s “O Sleep, Fond Fancy” followed by the world premier of “Mi Ze Hidlik”, a Haukkah poem by a 20th century rabbi, paired with a lilting Israeli folk melody arranged by Kevin Dill.

The Men’s Ensemble opens the second half of the concert, with another English carol “God Rest Ye Merry” arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams and then feature, in a liturgical chant style, “Karitas Habundat” by the modern Italian composer Carlotta Ferrari. They end with “Viva, viva” by Antonio Salieri and a sea shanty titled “A-Roving” arranged by well-known conductor Roger Wagner, featuring baritone Ken Kutzer ’18.

The College Choir takes the stage beginning with a short Plainsong “Of the Father’s Heart Begotten” which segues seamlessly into Healey Willan’s “Sanctus and Benedictus” from “Missa Brevis #4”. Ward Jamison then accompanies on piano for “Citadel Hill”, a boisterous folk song from Nova Scotia in a recent arrangement by award-winning Canadian composer Mark Sirett. They then demonstrate their command of the German language with “Der Gerechte Kommt Um”, a poignant a cappella setting of verses from the book of Isaiah by baroque composer Johann Kuhnau. They close with English carol “A Merry Christmas” arranged by Arthur Warrell.

To conclude the concert, all of the ensembles converge on stage in a choir of 101 voices to perform two songs, conducted by Ward Jamison and accompanied on piano by Kevin Dill – “Welcome Yule” by Williametta Spencer, and “Hallelujah, Amen” from “Judas Maccabeus” by George Frideric Handel.

This concert recording is another in a series produced by Chaffee Sound Productions for Allegheny College on the Chestnut Ridge Records label.
