Album Notes
The Andersons! are somewhat of a power pop supergroup that came to prominence in the late '90s/early '00s, featuring Derrick Anderson (longtime bassist for The Bangles who has also toured with Dave Davies of The Kinks, Susanna Hoffs, The Smithereens and others) and Bob Anderson (aka Robbie Rist of Brady Bunch/Sharknado/Wonderboy/Martin Luther Lennon etc. notoriety). The Andersons’ sound is anchored by the melodic and characteristically fluid bass lines of Derrick Anderson, who also sings lead on about 80 percent of the songs. His throaty yet warm vocals are as distinctive as they are inviting, but the tunes are driven by the high-octane guitars of Bob and Bill Anderson (yes, they all have the same last name, just like the Ramones). Bob and Bill (aka Wil O'Brien) also share lead vocal chores and with three accomplished vocalists in the mix, ringing harmonies abound.

The Family Jewels (The Best of The Andersons!) comes jam-packed with enough catchy pop hooks and memorable lyrics to have you singing along after one listening. The album features selections from both their colorful 1998 debut Separated at Birth and the 2001 follow up Family Secrets, as well as three tracks making their first appearance on an Andersons release: “Listening Station,” “She’s Probably With Him Right Now” and "(When You Had Your) Hair." The album opens with the one-two punch of "Retro Girl" & "The Truth Is Out" and doesn't let go. Other highlights include Derrick's rockin, Tolstoy-referencing "Snub"; Bill's irreverent lament about a fish thought to be extinct ("Hey Coelacanth") and girl with a certain 5 o'clock shadow ("TV Girl"); Derrick’s 6/8 psychedelic romp "Looking Glass," as well as Bob's heartfelt, Big Star-esque "Apology". While one also hears glimmers of The Beatles, The Smithereens, early Elvis Costello and even the Monkees in The Andersons’ sound, The Family Jewels showcases a band with a style all its own.
