ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Let your mind run free as the sounds of A Hushed Thrill transport you into the breathtaking world of Brookgreen Gardens on South Carolina's coast. Experience an enchanting new exploration into the eclectic influences of the garden in this special collaboration between Ron Daise of Brookgreen Gardens and students from Coastal Carolina University's Athenaeum Press.

This project expresses the joy of visiting Brookgreen Gardens - a hushed thrill to many. It began with an idea from Gretchen Downer, a member of The Friends of Brookgreen Gardens, for a song that would showcase the sights and sounds of the gardens. Following the muse of Brookgreen, Ron Daise penned the words and melodies of these songs and crafted the interludes between tracks from guest comments. The songs were then developed by a dedicated team of music students and faculty from The Athenaeum Press at Coastal Carolina University, a student-driven publishing lab. Students arranged, performed, recorded, designed, edited and mastered this entire project from tracks to packaging.

The core group of students on this project also formed Coastal Carolina University's jazz combo, who have received accolades from DownBeat music magazine for outstanding performance as a blues/rock/pop group at the undergraduate level in its 39th Student Music Awards. The Jazz Combo also performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and other jazz festivals in Vienne, France, and Umbria, Italy.

Ron Daise is a singer-songwriter, Gullah preservationist and vice president for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens. A native of St. Helena Island, SC, Daise, along with his wife Natalie, starred in Gullah Gullah Island, the award‐winning Nick Jr. TV show of the 1990s. Daise has also produced several albums, including his most recent Gullah Tings Fa Tink Bout (2014).

This project was produced by The Athenaeum Press at Coastal Carolina University, a student-driven publishing lab that produces multimedia projects that translate regionally-specific stories to a national audience.
