This collection of songs represents a long span of time in our musical lives. There are songs here that we’ve known and played since we were young’uns and some that we learned especially for this project. Paul Simon’s 1968 classic "Kathy’s Song" is one that Kris learned back in the early 70’s on her Gibson 12-string guitar, so we had to use that same guitar on this recording. The John Hartford song "Wish We Had Our Time Again" holds wonderful memories of the long friendship we had with John. One day while hanging out at his house he pulled out a card with his beautiful hand-written lyrics of the song and we sang it over and over. Now when we sing it we sing it with John in mind, along with all of our other dear friends who are no longer with us. Gordon Lightfoot’s "Song For A Winter’s Night" is a tune that Kris and Dale sang for years but never in public, only during the winter months in their living room. Bill Monroe’s "The One I Love is Gone" was written in the early 50’s but first recorded by Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard; it has become one of our favorite songs to play live. Kris heard and liked the song "Sad Songs And Waltzes" on a recording by the band Cake, later realizing it was written by Willie Nelson. We thought the record could use another country tear-jerker so we added it to our list. We’ve always loved Nancy Griffith and sing a few of her songs, so we wanted to include "I Wish It Would Rain". "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar" has been recorded by many bluegrass greats, but Ethan wanted to slow it down and channel the lonesome vibe of The Delmore Brothers’ original 1933 version, which is a perfect feature for his guitar playing. "Picture In A Frame" by Tom Waits is a sweet love song that had just the right feel for Dale’s voice and Ethan’s Sitar Guitar. When we heard Roger Miller’s version of "What Are Those Things (With Big Black Wings)" we loved the song and felt like it would work as a folk song, so we changed it to a waltz and slowed it down and it’s become a new favorite. "Bloody Heart" is another one that we loved, hearing it on a Morrison and West album, and had fun messing with the arrangement a little. We added a couple of newer songs to round out our list, Ryan Adam’s "Pearls On A String" and "Something Special", written by Aubrie Sellers and Adam Wright. Both of these songs fit us well and we love their gentle feel, so we started the album with one and ended it with the other.
