Shostakovich String Quartet No. 3, Barber, Pounds String Quartets

by The Bingham String Quartet

The three string quartets on this album all have a musical intensity in common. The Barber quartet contains the famous 'Adagio' which has been recorded many times and in many forms. The Pounds Quartet is a concise and exciting work.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Barber String Quartet was performed in its final version in 1943. The work is in three movements, the central one being the famous 'Adagio'. It was clearly a struggle for the composer as the piece was begun in 1936.
The Pounds String Quartet no. 2 was composed in 2003. It derives most of its material from two subjects, one modal and fugal in style and the other reflective. The rhythmic vitality of this work is typical of his style.
Shostakovich is a musical giant of the 20th century. His struggles in the Soviet Union, his relationship with the dictator Stalin and the circumstances surrounding his prolific output are well documented. Many of his works represent the voice of the individual against tyranny and the all-embracing emotional content of his third String Quartet is a wonderful example of his ability to directly communicate and at the same time achieve technical excellence.
