Album Notes
The Blue-hots is a hip Pittsburgh-based jazz vocal group that exotically blends pre-1960 jazz and pop music in original compositions. We are dedicated to reaching new audiences with a more exotic and tuneful approach to jazz. In a tribute to the songwriting traditions of yore, we compose songs that are meant to be sold to and sung by other artists.

The Blue-hots' typical lineup includes piano, upright bass, guitar, percussion, horn, and vocal trio, or any combination therein. The Blue-hots live under the umbrella of "retro-cocktail." The Blue-hots shuffle jazz idioms drawn from pre-1960s pop music: blues, boogie, stride, swing, bebop. We combine sophisticated lyrics and modern themes with jazz harmonies and a show-biz presentation. We aim to hook uninitiated listeners with an offbeat approach; think Duke Ellington and George Gershwin combined with Patience and Prudence and Nina Simone, combined with Burt Bacharach and Randy Newman, combined with Rufus Wainwright and even She and Him, with Esquivel mixed in.

Our songs maintain the structure, harmonic progressions, melodic lines, and syncopated rhythms that have characterized much of the American musical compendium from roughly 1910 to 1960. Licensing our original music and recordings to television, film and other media is a top priority. The Blue-hots have the unique skill set to provide proxy material to these outlets without the hefty licensing fees that are often incurred by established artists.

Our composers are Union affiliated and protected under current ASCAP regulations. Partnerships with music publishers are welcome. Songs are also available on commission, with products including (but not limited to) lead sheets and arrangements.
