ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Crayfish Sisters recreate the vintage harmony sound of the Davis Sisters and other vocal duets and trios of the 1950s and 60s. For singing “sisters” Sarah Bonner, Lynn Healey and Caroline Alderson, adapting the emotive and unabashedly direct style of the Davis Sisters into potent trios is a labor of love. Along with their core repertoire of vintage country harmony, they enjoy reviving swinging sister trios from groups like the Fontane Sisters, brother duets from the Everly’s, and 1950s doo wop gems. Their song list also includes original harmony arrangements of vintage dance hall favorites from country stars like Norma Jean and Dolly Parton.

Lynn and Caroline have been singing bluegrass and country harmony for over 40 years in bands that include, among others, Orange Line Special, the Blue Moon Cowgirls and Rodeo Motel. Sarah has been harmony singing for years; most recently with Capital City Voices, a traditional jazz ensemble. Sarah and Caroline began their partnership in 2013, reviving old Davis Sisters songs; they were thrilled to welcome Lynn, another Davis Sisters fan, in 2014. A respected veteran player in the traditional bluegrass scene, Lynn’s spot on rhythm guitar and flat picking provide solid support for the trio’s all-acoustic ensembles as well as full country dance bands with whom the Crayfish Sisters perform.

Like the Crayfish Sisters, Betty Jack Davis and her partner Skeeter weren’t really sisters, but sang as if they were. After Betty Jack was tragically killed in a 1955 car accident, Skeeter kept her stage name and continued to record Davis Sisters style songs, overdubbing the harmony parts. With songs of love lost or almost had, like “I Forgot More (Than You’ll Ever Know about Him)” and “You Weren’t Ashamed to Kiss Me Last Night” the Crayfish Sisters bring these legacy performances back to life —unvarnished as when they were first pressed more than 50 years ago.

The singers are backed by Lynn Kasdorf’s period perfect pedal steel and vintage rhythm by rock-a-billy veterans Louie Newmyer (string bass) and Tommy Bowes (drums). Recorded by Gizmo Recording Company, Mastered by Airshow Mastering and produced by Dede Wyland.

Must-buy CD!
If you love sweet harmonies, great songs and beautiful music, buy this CD! The Crayfish Sisters draw on their many influences, but bring a modern touch to an eclectic mix of songs, all seasoned with a mournful pedal steel that will warm your heart. Highly recommended!
