ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Empire Jazz Orchestra is a professional jazz repertory orchestra, based in upstate New York, that performs music ranging from Louis Armstrong to Frank Zappa. The band is renowned for its playing of original scores of Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Clare Fischer, Oliver Nelson, and many other great American composers and arrangers. The EJO has also commissioned new music from composers Bill Holman and Rufus Reid, and regularly plays new scores by members of the ensemble.

The EJO has performed with some of America's greatest musicians as guest soloists, including Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Lew Soloff, Dave Holland, David "Fathead" Newman, and many, many more.

"The EJO is the reigning big band of the Northeast"
- Berkshire Jazz Festival

“The Empire Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. William Meckley, is an exceptional ensemble in the top tier of professional big bands. They take their art seriously, enjoy what they do and you can see it in the response they get from audiences. I know; I've had the pleasure of performing with them and standing in front of their huge wall of sound as guest conductor. They are a great cultural asset and will help keep Jazz vital for new generations to come.”

-Brent Fischer
Grammy®-winning Producer, Composer, Arranger
Director of the Clare Fischer Bands

“In life there are sometimes memorable epiphanies that occasionally shed light into corners of our lives. When I went to Schenectady to appear with the Empire Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bill Meckley, the bright light of one of these epiphanies was awaiting my arrival within the embodiment of that wonderful orchestra. Their performance was dense with talent and spirit... and anticipation, a necessary element in jazz. They sent music out into the medium of the air mercifully searching out waiting ears and hearts that were completely fulfilled ... including my own. Would that we had more like them.”

-Benny Golson

"The Empire Jazz Orchestra is an organization of highly skilled world-class musicians. I was truly impressed with their ability to successfully handle a broad scope of musical styles. They played my original music beautifully. It was indeed a pleasure to perform with them. I look forward to making music with them again in the future. BRAVO EJO!"

-Rufus Reid

“The EJO played my music very well. It was a love fest!”

-Jimmy Heath
