Album Notes
The Fire is a high energy Scottish music band with world class fiddling in combination with bagpipes, guitar, bodhran, whistle, and bouzouki. The group includes, International Scottish Fiddle Champion Rebecca Lomnicky, multi-instrumentalist David Brewer of the popular Celtic band Molly’s Revenge, and Adam Hendey on guitar and bouzouki. Based in Santa Cruz, California, members of the trio have each spent copious amounts of time delving into the traditions of their respective instruments, with Lomnicky and Brewer having additionally lived and studied in both Edinburgh and the highlands of Scotland. Having previously performed together for nearly ten years, Lomnicky and Brewer have been hailed as an “excellent American duo” by Robbie Shepherd of BBC Radio Scotland. Together, The Fire performs captivating Scottish music which bridges the gap between the fiddle and bagpipe music of Scotland—two worlds united, into a heartfelt and rousing musical experience.

The release of "Ignite" marks a new era for The Fire. Adam Hendey joined the group in July 2016 making this EP the first recording featuring the new trio sound. Composed of primarily traditional Scottish tunes, "Ignite" showcases every aspect of The Fire’s stylistic expertise, technical prowess, and musical passion, and displays the dynamic interplay of fiddle and bagpipes for which Lomnicky and Brewer have become well known. Lomnicky’s internationally-awarded virtuosic fiddling is featured throughout on tracks ranging from an ancient, haunting Gaelic air in “The Power Set,” to a delightful strathspey and reel medley from the North-East of Scotland. Her expertise in the Scottish tradition is widely recognized, including enthusiastic reviews by BBC, FiddleFreak.com, and Dirty Linen Magazine as well as many other accolades. In addition to featuring Brewer’s technical mastery of the bagpipe and whistle, as well as his incomparable expertise on bodhran, this EP features the pipe march “Calum MacKinnon” which is one of his original compositions. On guitar and bouzouki, Hendey brings an innovative contemporary approach to traditional music, with a passion informed by intense study of music theory and a diverse wealth of musical experience. Hendey’s playing perfectly complements Lomnicky and Brewer’s dynamic melodies with both sensitive and dramatic guitar lines and layers of contrapuntal bouzouki harmony. To showcase The Fire’s charisma on stage, "Ignite" additionally contains a music video to accompany the opening track of the album, “The Golden Penny.”

With its traditional roots and magnificent contemporary spirit, "Ignite" paves the way for the future of Scottish folk music.
