ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Singapore Slingers orchestra is from Dallas, TX. The 18-piece group is one of the premiere society orchestras of the pre-swing era, boasting a repertoire spanning the years of 1895 to 1935- hot jazz, early swing, ragtime, one-steps, two-steps, waltzes, rhumbas, polkas, tangos, Castle Walks, oriental fox trots, and much more.

Their latest album, "The Frank Skinner Project," is a loving tribute to one of the finest stock arrangers of the 1920s and 1930s, Frank Skinner- the man who literally wrote the book on hot dance band arranging. Between 1925 and 1935, Skinner wrote and arranged some 2,000 popular songs. The orchestra has chosen 15 of their favorite, and most popular Skinner arrangements and recorded them for you, for your listening and dancing pleasure.

The Singapore Slingers have been working since 2008. The orchestra is under the direction of Matt Tolentino- 29 years old as of May 2014. Tolentino has made it his life's mission to preserve the popular music of yesterday for the audience of today. His collections include hundreds of stock arrangements, as well as a large collection of sheet music. He also has a large collection of original 78 rpm records, as well as piano rolls... as well as a player piano and a collection of phonographs.

The orchestra itself is 18-piece. These were the largest orchestras heard in the 1920s (and arguably what makes them one of the most authentic). Orchestras of this size where heard in theatres, vaudeville houses, and large dance halls. The Slingers are a true orchestra, boasting a 5 piece string section in addition to the horns- 2 violins, viola, cello, and string bass. Instruments that were left of the swing band roster find a home in the Slingers- flute, clarinet, and banjo help lend to their big, full sound. The orchestra derives its authenticity from reading vintage stock charts and transcriptions based on original recordings.

Historical influences include the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, The California Ramblers, Harry Reser, and many more; contemporary influences include Vince Giordano, and the New Leviathan Oriental Fox Trot Orchestra.
