Album Notes
The Old School Road is the new recording from The Grass Cats of North Carolina. This is their ninth CD for New Time Records and it captures the band doing what it does best - and that is combining the finest qualities of traditional and contemporary bluegrass in well crafted original songs and thoughtfully chosen covers. Since their start in 1997, the Cats have always approached their music with a dynamism and attention to detail that's resulted in a strong fan base and a catalog of exceptional critically acclaimed recordings - including five top 10 CDs, several charting songs and three number one singles. Now in their eighteenth year with close to one thousand shows behind them, they continue their tradition of presenting bluegrass in its highest form with the music from The Old School Road.

Powerful lead singing, seamless harmony, spirited instrumentation and compelling song choices all combine for the Grass Cats signature sound. They have honed this sound, their craft and style to a fine edge on The Old School Road. Russell Johnson contributed six original songs for the CD. The first single, The Old School Road is the tile cut and Russell's testament to growing up in rural North Carolina. His soulful and soaring tenor vocal on Can It Get It Get More Lonesome Than This and the hard-driving 85 On 85 will satisfy anyone's desire for pure bluegrass singing. Come In, a gospel quintet selection performed a cappella style with guest vocalist Emily Kirsch is a moving vocal tour de force.

Russell is not the only lead singer, three other Cats take a turn singing lead. Tim Woodall renders a heartfelt cover of Alan Jackson's A Woman's Love while Rick Lafleur's earnest bluegrass treatment of the Johnny Cash classic Ring Of Fire pays homage to the original while making it distinctly his own. Fiddler Chris Hill's rich baritone and Tim's spot on tenor are featured on the early 90’s Marty Stuart classic Don't Leave Her Lonely Too Long.

The Grass Cats are five musicians with a musical story to tell. They are the exceptional banjo of Rick Lafleur, the razor sharp guitar playing of Alan Mullen, silky smooth harmonies of bassist Tim Woodall and fiddler Chris Hill, and the songs, voice and soul of Russell Johnson on mandolin. Now well into their second decade as a band, this NC-based act is still entertaining audiences with their live performances and critically acclaimed recordings.
