ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
What This Is

The Graze is the solo recording/performing project of Seattle songwriter Louis O'Callaghan. Iowa Anvil is the graze's first album, and is ten songs of melodic, hook-laden, lo-fi indie melancholia in sparse guitar-and-vocal arrangements as well as full-on rock.

Critics Like It

"...praise should be lavished on the Graze, the one-man project of songwriter Louis O'Callaghan. The band's self-released debut, 'Iowa Anvil,' is full of tender-hearted laments and wrenching ballads. His tentative voice holds the perfect blend of agony and restraint."

- Tizzy Asher, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"Excellent debut from this local one man band 'the Graze' (Louis O'Callaghan). Passionate, heartfelt songs inspired by Elliott Smith or Nick Drake but with is own original voice. Great songs with the right amount of production and subtle guitar arrangement. Great debut."
- John Richards, KEXP 90.3 FM Seattle

"...the Graze's 'Iowa Anvil' is a highly entertaining and consistently strong first full-length..."
- Tom Scanlon, Seattle Times

"This CD is really fucking good."
- J.R. Zufelt, Music Director, KRUA 88.1 FM Anchorage

Iowa Anvil was in rotation at a number of college radio stations around the country (see www.j-shirt.com/thegraze/radio.html for a list), including KEXP 90.3 FM in the Graze's hometown of Seattle.

take my breath away
This CD has been a long time coming, but well worth the wait. The voice of The Graze (Louis O'Callaghan) is melodic melancholy bliss supported by masterful guitar. I'm not a musician, so the intricacies are lost on me. However, I do know that there is a track on this CD for every one of those moments I feel I just need the 'right' song. I like this CD so much, that I alone have purchased 5.

It's like Elliot back from the grave, but different
Pretty damn good. The CD has it's own sound though some tracks are similar to Elliot Smith, they have their own sound. And that sound is good. Check this CD out. It's totally worth it.

Excellent, Uplifting CD
I am planning to buy this CD. I know this review space is for people who have bought the cd, but I have listened to a good deal of it already, in part, and I want to say that this is the first CD that I have really felt inspired by in a while. As a filmmaker, I use music to drive a moment and this CD is moving.

Why the *&$% are these guys not signed?
I stumbled across this band. They could easily be the next coldplay, radiohead, or Travis. The songs are catchy and really damned good. I don't even like most modern rock music and these guys have got it.

Completely inspiring.
Wonderful CD. Nothing better to listen to when you're going through a rough time and need to feel like someone else relates. The vocals, and the whole ambience of the recording is 100% genuine. Highly recommend it.

Tamara Turner, CD Baby

Regardless of the inevitable comparisons and mentioning of Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith, Beck, the vague, occasional whispers of something even Beatles-like and a hum of Nirvana-sprinkled tension, The Graze navigates its way through a rugged and yet vulnerable emo landscape that's both fresh and familiar for their audience. Revealing a simple approach, a humble, stripped-down partnership with their own creativity, this Seattle-based group's album earns its moments of culmination, earns its peaks and transformations with ease and fluency, exposing their natural talent for conceptualizing and manifesting the elusive and abstract process of packaging emotion within song.

A great CD to sit back, enjoy life and have a good chat with friends
A great CD to sit back, enjoy life and have a good chat with friends. We got to see your gig in Phoenix. It was great to hear the songs live. We purchased multiple CDs and cool t-shirts. I can’t wait for your next CD.

This CD rocks and so does the band. It's too bad the singer and I aren't closer, or I'd totally do him!
