ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
After performing for 10 years and releasing an EP, Rocks and Minerals is the first full-length release by The John Punch Band. From intimate guitar and voice sections to full ensemble sections with gorgeous violins, banjos, horns and more, this album covers a wide variety of sounds and moods. The 11 song album focuses on current issues ranging from the environment to war and human rights.

Started in 2004, The John Punch Band has been performing regularly in Ottawa and the surrounding areas. Opening for acts such as Fred Eaglesmith and performing at venues such as the Ottawa Bluesfest and the historic Black Sheep Inn, The John Punch Band has become an established band, appreciated by longtime fans and newcomers alike. After releasing their first EP, Exclaim! wrote “Fences Have Been Planted, Thorns Have Been Built is a compelling five-track EP that reads like a tacit promise of a follow-up full-length album worth waiting for.” The wait is now over.

Cory Thibodeau - Guitar/Vocals
Matt MacKinnon - Drums
Benny Gutman - Bass
Anthony Bacon - Cello
Ueli Dörig - Saxophone

"Strong and understated songwriting, with subtleties suggesting Bon Iver and Rural Alberta Advantage. There's a hint of new gospel influence and strong echoes of 90's radio-friendly folk"
- NOW Magazine
