ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born in New York City; the South Bronx; Julio L. Matta is now based in Maryland, where he is a musician, producer, arranger, and songwriter. Growing up in New York, Julio was exposed to Latin music, while he studied piano for two years and worked with local bands. Although Julio studied piano, his love for the percussion instrument was his true passion and after several years at the keyboards, he continued his musical career as a percussionist. As an adult finding himself in Los Angeles, California, Julio’s percussion opportunities opened up with Marylyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., Millie Jackson, Gloria Gaynor, and several others. After several years touring and living in Los Angeles, Julio enlisted in the U.S. Army served in Korea and Germany. Living in Germany, Julio met and performed with several local musicians, including the famous jazz saxophonist Klaus Dordinger. For more than twenty-five years, Julio has traveled over twenty different countries and performed with several notable artists, including Gato Barbieri, Lou Rawls, Sly and The Family Stone, Luis Perrico Ortiz, Justo Betancourt, Jon Akkerman and Billy Cobham. Julio’s music brings together a wide-breadth of traditional and contemporary influences, including Latin, Afro-Cuban, Rock, R&B, Adult Contemporary, Jazz, Fusion, Brazilian, and alternative styles of music. Julio remarks, “Many of these genres are intertwined in my heritage; as a Puerto Rican, even though born in New York, I have roots embedded from Africa…the indigenes Indian of Puerto Rico [were] mated with African slaves. I believe that my love for the percussion instrument was embedded in my gene pool because of this meeting of Taino Indian, and African slave; blood I carry in my veins…I believe this makes me one unique musical individual.”

The one unifying and defining dictum in Julio’s musical career revolves around experimentation: “…I have never been afraid to experiment with different styles of music, musicians, instruments, anything that when played, I know someone is going to connect with the sound, music, instrument, overall aura of my music.” Some of this experimentation and cultural immersion stems from an impressive collegiate and social resume in pre-law, Human & Strategic Organizational Management, Laws protecting Civil and Labor Rights, an MBA, and certification in musical technology (Pro Tools) from Berklee College of Music. Additionally, Julio believes: “Music is the ultimate communication between people. No purer form of communicating exists than through music. Music allow[s] you to express feelings, sad, happy, exciting, danceable, and when you lock energy between the crowd and the band on stage, everyone is on the same sheet of music. It is the most natural high ever…for me; music is the main ingredient for life.” Julio’s most important messages regarding music making, include: (1) not being held down by musical/geographical borders, (2) music experimentation, (3) instrumental and vocal interpretations, (4) be a voice for social awareness through music, and (5) remaining true to one’s self.

For Julio, “making-it” in music revolves around the ability to, “…[be] able to do what I love [,] which is music and communicating with people through music.” Now Julio Matta has teamed up with Ariella Records, as he embarks on his new project, his dream several years in the making, which is to record his first debut Album and produce his first music video. “The Mother Of Exiles Project.” To initiate this two-part project, Julio in partnership with Ariella will be releasing his new Single “Mother Of Exiles”. The expected date of release is June 2016. While the Single “Mother of Exiles” hits the airways to create a musical movement of followers, increase his global Fan Base, and attract attention to a very important issue, which is Immigration in the United States; Julio will embark in a two-stage crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo.com. The first stage of his crowdfunding campaign will consist of raising fund to recruit a professional team of creative musicians, vocalist, producers; recording studios, and experienced engineers to complete his first debut Album “Mother Of Exiles”. The recording of the Album has begun but funding is needed to complete this very important stage. Upon successfully completing the Album, Julio will initiate the second stage of the Mother Of Exiles project by producing his first music video on the issue of Immigration. Stage two of the project will consist of raising funds to recruit scriptwriters, video/film production professionals, special guest musician, attract the interest of guest artist; corporations, and celebrities to gain generous donors in the procurement of funds to achieve this music/video goal. “The Mother of Exiles music/video will present the issue of immigration, set in New York City, at Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty in honor of freedom for everyone, which has been protected and defended by America’s Hero the generations of Exiles and Immigrants who have been the bedrock of safeguarding the shores of hope, prosperity and freedom for all. Julio asserts, “This is my music and video production goals. By succeeding in producing and releasing this music video, this will make me feel as, not only have I made my mark in music, I have made an impact and difference as an Artist communicating to the world that America will always be protected by its Sentinel, shining her beacon of light for all the children of the world to find their way to the shores of hope, prosperity and freedom.”
