Album Notes
Anne Mathews (of the brass party band Orkestar Zirkonium) and Valerie Holt (of the women's Balkan choral ensemble Dunava) became friends in 2004 when both were members of the Infernal Noise Brigade, a radical marching band originally formed to participate in the protests around the 1999 WTO Ministerial Conference in Seattle. In their eight years of making music together, the two singers have amassed and arranged a broad range of traditional and modern folk songs from a variety of eras, from the U.S. and beyond; this album, their debut recording, presents some favorites.

Half of the album was recorded in a field at Washington State's historic 360-acre Smoke Farm (now an arts venue and reclaimed habitat for wildlife); the other half was recorded at Seattle's former INS detention center (which was decommissioned in 2004 and is now an arts and cultural venue). The content is eclectic - an ancient Kosovar wedding song, a midcentury pop song from Cuba, traditional Sephardic and Bosnian lullabies, and recent offerings from American songwriters such as Dolly Parton and Gillian Welch. (The handcrafted physical album also includes translations of the song lyrics.) Fans of close harmonies and world/traditional/folk music will love this birdsong-drenched collection of field-recorded gems.
