Album Notes
The Moon Pierrot (Лунный Пьеро) were a one-of-a-kind avant-garde rock band that emerged in Moscow (USSR) in 1985 on the wave of Perestroika.
Unlike their contemporaries, they distinguished themselves from others with their sophisticated music, elite artistic vision, world-class musicianship and western european sound.

The main driving force behind and the founder of the band was guitarist, singer and composer Arthur Mountaniol - now a prolific recording artist and independent filmmaker in the U.S.A.
The Moon Pierrot have been often compared to King Crimson, but as the years have passed, their music now appears to be nothing short of original, profound, amazing and innovative in its own right.
However, back in those days, they were misunderstood by the majority of people whose music tastes were formed by the Soviet cheesy pop culture, and also avoided by ignorant concert promoters who were hostile to that kind of music.

Although, at the same time the band was getting increasingly popular among Moscow and St. Petersburg underground rock fans and having successfully performed at a number of big rock festivals, they signed a record deal with the Russian major label "Melodia" which released their first vinyl LP in 1991.
Unfortunately the record came out around the time when the country was seized by the political turmoil which paralyzed all aspects of life and made it impossible for the band to continue.

However in 1992, in this uncertain situation, two remaining members of the band - Arthur Mountaniol and drummer Stas Kanareykin with the help of their friend - sound engineer Igor Klimenkov managed to record their second English language album called "Whispers & Shadows".
By the time they finished the recording, their label was already out of funds and was incapable of releasing records anymore, so Arthur Mountaniol went to West Germany and started looking for a record deal there. But the German music industry turned out to be even more conservative and skeptical and totally unwilling to accept anything innovative especially from Russia. So this album has never been released and for almost 22 years has been completely lost and forgotten.

Now we are proud to announce its first U.S. release!

"Whispers & Shadows" features eight studio tracks and two bonus live tracks recorded in 1990.

Band lineup:
Arthur Mountaniol: guitars, vocals, piano, keyboard, music & lyrics
Stas Kanareykin: drums
Yura Sergeev: fretless bass guitar on bonus tracks

Recorded, mixed & mastered by Igor Klimenkov at The Mossovet Theater Studio,
Moscow, Russia

Russian World-class Prog Rock Phenomenon!
To my surprise, I've never heard this band before, even though I'm originally from Russia. But let me tell you guys, this is a world-class prog rock phenomenon. Get yourself a copy - it will make you proud that there's something really great in rock music that's come out of Russia.

Bravo The Moon Pierrot!

Russia’s Greatest Undiscovered Prog Rock Band of the Soviet Era!
I think The Moon Pierrot is the greatest undiscovered prog rock band from Russia. Their album “Whispers & Shadows” is a work of amazing spiritual depth and mystical atmosphere performed with a meticulous precision and virtuosity. Visionary music, imaginative instrumentation and vocals ranging from rock to complete experimental madness create a very unique world like you’ve never heard before. Highly recommended!

Grandiose Final Achievement!
I discovered "The Moon Pierrot" a while ago on YouTube. This is the Russian band that doesn't really sound like a band from Russia at all. Thanks to its leader - a multi-talented musician extraordinaire Arthur Mountaniol, it's got a Western sound, a top-notch musicianship and a unique vision. Watching their videos made me very interested in this band and now I got a chance to review their last work entitled "Whispers & Shadows".

This album is in English. It was recorded in 1992 by only two remaining members of the band - Arthur Mountaniol: guitars, vocals, bass guitar, keyboards and Stas Kanareykin: drums & percussions.

After listening to this CD, the first thing that popped into my mind was "Grandiose!"
And Grandiose It Is. The album opens with the furious "Carnival of Shadows" - music perhaps inspired by the Latin-American rhythms. It has the impressive guitar solo and climax. The trumpet-like keyboard parts in choruses are sharp, sounding like an orchestra supported by the high energy rhythm section. Unlike any cheerful carnival tunes, this one is dark and mystical, and it's in 3/4th time signature. The first line of the lyrics "Reels of shadows by the Spanish gallows" will tell you that it has nothing to do with "Lambada".

The second track "Happy End" is a mysterious piece sung mostly in a whisper and having the obsessive guitar theme. It's also in 3/4th which gives the song a rolling feel. The middle part though, will take you even deeper into this bizarre world with its dark voices from beyond.

The next track "Samba Mamba" has the amazing xylophone-like polyphonic parts and goes entirely in 7/8 th time signature.

The song "Bad luck" was probably intended as a promo single and is a rock song with bluesy intonations and powerful vocals.

"Starry Rain" is a mesmerizing piece with a deep philosophical meaning and the beautiful falsetto chorus.

"Crimson Toys" has an icy atmosphere and a pretty crazy beat. And the "cut-off" transition before the guitar solo - it kind of knocks you off.

"The Last Duet" is a nice instrumental piece for guitar and drums. Beautiful and complex with a jazzy feel to it. This one perhaps symbolizes the band's farewell.

The last number "Pink Land of Blue Mountains" is a great psychedelic epic with trippy soundscapes and the memorable chorus in the end.

This album also has a couple of bonus tracks that will give you an idea of how the band sounded live. "Changeableness" is full of raw energy, demonstrating improvisation skills of musicians, with a lot of Mountaniol's ferocious guitar and Kanareykin's polyrhythmic drums.

As to "Dodecaphonia", well... it's a true avant-garde piece that will blow your mind with its unstoppable energy and atonal guitar virtuosity. As I recall from their video, the guitarist played this by tapping, holding guitar in a vertical position just like a cello - something that I've never seen anyone else doing.

On bonus tracks there also appears the former fretless bass guitar player Yura Sergeev.

All music & lyrics and also arrangements were done by Arthur Mountaniol.

The sound production of this album is outstanding. Even though it was recorded in 1992, it lives up to the modern day.

I highly recommend this album to anyone who loves progressive, experimental and psychedelic rock especially in the vein of King Crimson, Genesis, Peter Gabriel and other similar artists.
