Album Notes
Turn a key in the lock of a motel room on any lonely reach of highway and untold memories of people you’ve never met flood over you: lost love, broken families, missed opportunities. Motels are repositories of hopes and dreams, found or lost. They chronicle ambition and anguish, dreams and despair, lives well lived and those gone badly wrong.

Motel Room is an amalgam of such memories: a Vietnam veteran, his life now defined by the cigarettes he smokes incessantly in the room he never leaves; a fading “Miss Oklahoma”, whose gentleman callers now must bring more than flowers; an aspiring actress still waiting for her close up; a maid who has cleaned up after the joys and mistakes of countless pilgrims. It appeared to the songwriters – Jeff Anderson, Olivia Rudeen, and Karleen Watt – as an unshakeable, ghostly image of a down-on-its-luck motel in the aching heart of America.

After writing the titular song, the three, who possess a shared love of storytelling, were unable to abandon the characters and the world they had created. So, they started convening regularly on the new project, calling themselves The MRC (Motel Room Club), and ended up with 10 songs that revisit the notion of the concept album.

For more than a year, they met every other week, keeping everything but the title track top secret from everyone, with the exception of Jeff’s wife and a few furry and feathered family members. This was no easy feat. Once recording began, they brought in other musicians who were sworn to secrecy, which only added to the creative magic surrounding the project.
