Album Notes
She Likes Purple (haiku for my muse) is the second release featuring "elite" session musicians from the little-known Pen-Mar region, where northern Maryland meets southern Pennsylvania. The project is an instrumental concept album comprised of nine original jazz/rock tunes, each titled after a line of haiku written by composer/producer Doug Benson as a gift for his wife Patty, after she survived cancer:

she likes purple
dragonflies and butterflies
Shakespeare and Hawking

kindred spirits
empathy and autism
meet in the middle

the west coast girl
her first snowfall in New York
pumpkins on our porch

The feasibility of turning the verses into jazz instrumentals depended on the timely availability of Doug's first-choice musician friends, all of whom had histories of great solo and session work at his studio, Commodore Recording, in Thurmont MD. They all graciously made themselves available for the project. In addition to Doug's own keyboard, bass and horn parts, he enlisted the help of Australian woodwind wizard Anita Thomas who played all saxes, flute and clarinet; gifted jazz drummer and teacher Edgar Myers; (Professor) Danny Webber on various electric and acoustic guitars; exquisite artiste Dr. Candice Mowbray on classical guitar; and the prodigious David Lester on funk bass.

Presented in three miniature suites, this "sonic poetry" paints pictures and creates feelings through music rather than words; but always in a very familiar and accessible way. Astute listeners will recognize many musical influences ranging from early swing up through contemporary jazz/rock fusion.

Doug Benson: producer, composer, keys, bass, cornet, trombone, baritone horn
Anita Thomas: soprano, alto, tenor, bari saxes; flute, clarinet
Danny Webber: various acoustic and electric guitars
Candice Mowbray: classical guitar
David Lester: funk bass
Edgar Myers: drums
