Album Notes
"Those old enough to miss telling scary campfire stories will find pleasant chills here, and something to think about, too."
- The New York Times

Hollow, an original musical by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell, premiered in September 2012 at the historic Off-Broadway Players Theatre. Inspired by the classic Washington Irving short story, the musical further investigates the legendary event in the Hollow as well as the Hollow in all of us. The production was honored with an Innovative Theatre Award nomination for Outstanding Original Music.

The musical features a live ensemble comprised of cello and percussion. Sgouros, a Julliard-trained percussionist, choose this specific orchestration for its diverse nature. “Two percussionist play over 30 instruments during the show” remarked Mr. Sgouros adding that the cello’s wide range allows for a great deal of variation from one musician. All of the sounds for the production are acoustic, including eerie Hollow sound effects created by using unique found objects such as a vacuum cleaner hose .

"Ms. Bell has imaginatively fleshed out these figures, creating distinctive voices. (Irving gave them almost no dialogue.) And Mr. Sgouros, a percussion specialist, has had fun with the story’s possibilities, adding the solemnity of a cello and conjuring eerie noises by applying a violin bow to a vibraphone’s side. One of the best numbers, “Not in Love Song,” flows like a tender ballad but offers lyrics that are far from sweet, allowing characters to explain their coldness. (Some of it has to do with previous hurts.)" - The New York Times
