ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In the grand scheme of time, which is scarcely comprehensible, Kali Yuga, according to the mystics, is the dark age of materialism, the Iron Age, the time in which we are living. Examples of failed love are everywhere and examples of true love are perhaps more profound in Kali Yuga than in any other period of history.

(Inspired by or attracted to music with a strong thread of spirituality in it, like that of George Harrison, Neil Young, U2, REM, etc? The Primatives spirituality runs through their music and is in fact the lifeblood of their music; subtle, primitive, unobtrusive.)

[From a primitive world seen through the eyes of an ancient and dying guardian in The Dragon's Song to the rocking bluegrass style of Can't Stop with its stark truthful message about the life of an artist, The Lovers of Kali Yuga is a tale of life in the "age of materialism"]

"Thunder: Not the loud scary kind but the rumbling under the surface rolling kind that seems to recall someplace in time and space grander than the space you're currently occupying.

That underneath kind of rolling thunder has made it's way out of the Badlands of North Dakota in the form of Jesse Hanson and his fine band The Primatives.

Haunting, soulful, voice, swirling someplace between Neil Young and Bob Dylan and lyrical content laden with a yearning for no less than the simplicity of a world we'd feel safe wrapping ourselves up when each day begins to unfold.

Feel safe, wrap yourself up one morning in your favorite blanket on your favorite old chair, cup of coffee, your lover or your dog at your side, and spend some time with your own vision of that world or better yet your memory of it.

And, oh yeah, you won't be disappointed if you bring The Primitives along with you."
-Brooklyn native writer- Emil Sofsky

THE LOVERS OF KALI YUGA

The Lovers of Kali Yuga is a project started by my son Jesse Allen and myself in a cabin in the wild west Badlands of western North Dakota 3 years ago. Most of the main tracks were recorded there. Then here in PA we got together with some other musicians to put down the rest of the "virtual tracks" and begin to play out.

(The current live form of the band is a primarily acoustic trio with Lilasuka on silver flute and percussion, Jack on electric bass, and myself on guitar with which we can be more intimate and dynamic with our music; so the CD is not an exact representation of our current style, but it is a represention of my music.)

From the eyes of an ancient and dying guardian in The Dragon's Song to the rocking bluegrass style of Can't Stop with its stark truthful message about the life of an artist, The Lovers of Kali Yuga is a tale of life in the "age of materialism".

Finally, the soft Lovers track is for my wife Lila who was apparently hiding from me during the rest of my life. And as Lovers begins - "Because you're tough; because you've had enough- i think of you, when i've other things to do"

THE PRIMATIVES
-Folk Music that Rocks-

-Jesse S. Hanson (songwriter, vocals, guitars)
-Lila Hanson (vocals, silver flute, mrdanga and other percussion)
-Jack (vocals, electric bass)

"The Primatives feature a blend of rock with eclectic influences of folk stylings and Indian rhythms. Jesse Hanson's melodic vocals and song lines are well-matched with pulsating, energetic guitar. These songs drive the point straight home in a style reminiscent of the influential Neil Young.
The songs are supported by Jesse's wife, Lila, who adds her own multi-cultural influence with percussive instruments and the flute and by Jack on bass whose musical interests range from folk to Dave Brubeck. They both add nicely balanced supportive vocals. The energy between Lila and Jesse feels magical."
-Tim Brodkorb (Rainbow Rising Coffee House) Smithton, PA-

The Primatives are an inspired primitive alternative rock/folk trio with subtle expressions of their individual spirituality that is the result of my lifetime of song writing and the mutual attraction between my wife Lila and i. Also, we are now supported by our Pittsburgh native friend, Jack on vocals and electric bass.

Lila is a native of Toronto, where she became actively involved in Krishna Consciousness and was initiated by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, relocated to the Pittsburgh/Wheeling, WV area where she taught in a small private school for 16 years. She devoted a lot of time to singing Bhajans with the children, teaching them Eastern instruments such as Mrdanga and Kartels, and produced with them an album of inspirational songs.

While other kids were rockin round the clock, Jack was singing the 5th harmony to The Beatles recordings along with marching in the drum corps. The first time we saw Jack, it was at a "Club Café" open stage where he opened with a Jim Morrison cover and then went on to Perry Como. That's diversity. With an incredible voice that gives me chills, Jack is our 3rd part harmony and bass player.

I am originally from North Dakota. i spent a considerable portion of my life in Seattle and vicinity, during which time i was initiated into spirituality by the Living Sant Mat Master from Rajasthan, Ajaib Singh. I paid some dues as a street musician and some in the cafes and bars, before returning to North Dakota where i raised my family after divorce.

We are presenting our very original brand of spiritually inspired alternative music to the kind folks in Pittsburgh specifically and western PA and Wheeling, WV area generally. Now we're hoping to reach a larger audience with the release of The Lovers of Kali Yuga.

The musical influences are so varied that categories and genres are in fact misleading. Our slogan is "Folk Music that Rocks".

Splendid harmonics and a treasure for the soul
Absolutely effulgent! The song Never Again has moved me to remember my youth, when I was a lad in the 60’s and 70’s. Proudly boasting about the Primatives, I can say I knew them when…

For those of us born in the 60’s, this CD will bring you home again. Way to Go Jess & Lila…and Hi Audrey! Love You all.

Really Awesome Music
I first heard this CD in college when this guy brought it down to my room. He said his dad worked hard on it and wanted reviews. My three roomates listened to it and loved it! Now that I have my copy, when I want to relax, I throw it in the CD player and let the music take it from there! Keep it real!

These two gentle souls take us on a profound journey...
These two gentle souls take us on a profound journey into the trials and tribulations of our times, only to emerge soaring with joy and hope. Allow yourself to ride on the waves of the soft, rhythmic intensity of their music, words and images. You'll be glad you did.

Wow, just wow. Amazing material.
I'm extremely pleased with this CD, The Lovers of Kali Yuga. The Dragon Song is powerfully atmospheric, with grat guitar work reminiscent almost of Cowgirl in the Sand, and the electric guitar so expresses the Dragon's dying thoughts, it's beautiful. Here Come the Primatives has likely some of the best lyrics of the album, with a good amount of both relevancy to current times and mysticism. Also, Never Again really strikes a chord with me, it's one of those sort of conclusionary-feeling acoustic sentimental, high energy vocals, kind of songs. My one complaint is that the studio version of Can't Stop isn't as powerful as hearing it live with all the force of the vocals and music, but the excellence of the lyrics make the song very enjoyable regardless. All of the other songs on the album are also excellent. Overall just a spectacular CD.
