Proverbs - "Distracted" Album Review by Floyd Kelly:

Over 40+ years of faithful service and 20 albums, The Proverbs have paid their dues, singing everything (and everywhere) a gospel group is "supposed" to sing - Country, Southern Gospel, Hymns, Bluegrass, Pop, Jazz and Contemporary Christian. While always well crafted with a distinctive flavour, there has been a sense that the Proverbs were delivering the music that was "expected" of a gospel group.

Not any more. With "dis-tract-ed", The Proverbs have found and created a unique sound that defines them. No longer emulating the styles of other groups, they have created a new gospel category - a fusion between Adult Contemporary and Smooth Jazz that showcases their tight harmonies and lush vocal arrangements reminiscent of Manhattan Transfer.

Karyl's new songs are brilliant, and even when covering standards re-popularized by the Gaither Vocal Band and Ernie Haase the Proverbs make them very distinctly their own. Listening to Get Away Jordon, one waits in wonder - what will they do with the "money notes"? But no - the Proverb's rendition is not about emulation - its about creating a brand new interpretation of the song based on smooth, fascinating and addictive harmony. Other groups deliver gospel music as a side-show: an impressive feat the first time you hear it, but after a few listen's it quickly becomes old. The Proverbs transform these songs into music you will want to hear again and again.

"dis-tract-ed" is neither strident nor preachy. It is music that brings peace in the midst of the insanity of daily living, and offers gentle encouragement to remain connected to God. This is music for grown-ups - honest, authentic and compelling. After 40+ years, the Proverbs have reinvented themselves, drawing on their unique strengths to offer a brand new sound in an industry that is so often "me-too". This is gospel music as it should be - this is how its done!
