Album Notes
"Play for Surf" is The Pyronauts 8th CD released in their 13 year history as a band. The Pyronauts play a unique brand of instrumental surf rock - sounds of the early 60s fused with playful songwriting and aggressive playing. "Play for Surf" is the groups first studio album to be released since "Surf and Destroy" which was released in 2006. The new album encompasses a good variety of material from the band - from playful acoustic versions of fan favorites like Sifaka and Pie to aggressive fast paced new material such as Jawbreaker and Amazon Warrior. Also included in the line up are two guest players: Gabriel Pramuk on fiddle and Joe Berry on saxophone. There are four cover tunes: Chick Habit (an instrumental version of "Laisse Tomber Les Filles" a French pop hit by Serge Gainsbourg which was later featured in the film Death Proof as "Chick Habit" recorded by April March), Jessica (a surfed up version of the Allman Brothers instrumental), Moby Dick (Led Zeppelin's epic drum solo song featuring phenomenal drummer Tim Stephenson), and Gymnopedie No. 1 (a minimalist classical piece by Erik Satie). From Sprinkler of Doom to Rumble in Kentucky the album highlights the playfulness of The Pyronauts coupled with their maturing musical skills and tastes. "Play for Surf" is meant to bring joy to the listener - please let us know what you think!
