Best opening three tunes since U2's "The Joshua Tree"
The first three songs on this CD are as good as any opening trio of tunes since U2’s “The Joshua Tree.” While not sonically (or historically) quite the same as U2, the Rails open “Parallel Movements” with jangle-pop anthems that mine some of the same spiritual themes that U2 has wrestled with on a global stage for years. While “Above the Clouds” and “The Next Life” extol a glorious after-life, that yearning for heaven is belied by the joyousness of this earth-bound music. Not all the great tunes are crammed into the start of this album – “Part-Time Punks” (with its catchy chorus) and “The Paradigm Shift” (featuring nice electronic keyboards) also are solid songs. The Rails slow things down for the last two songs, but it’s the beginning that makes this one strong.
