Album Notes
Bird On A Ladder, a collaboration by The Soles with producer Alex Mine, is an exploration of cinematic and electronic 'chill-out' techno sounds. While working towards their follow up record to the Broken Ghost EP, The Soles have tried countless versions of songs, experimenting with many genres of music and this track was a welcome surprise. While not indicative of the sound of their next record, The Soles found themselves enjoying being at the edge of unknown sonic territory.

The Soles lead singer Din says, "I've always loved artists like David Bowie, Beck and Radiohead that can change their sound from release to release. So after I heard this mix by Alex, I was surprised to hear how well The Soles translated to this sort of dreamy, electronic, techno feel. I enjoyed the cinematic state this track put me in. I liked both what it achieved artistically and that it is also a somewhat of a risk to release something quite different for The Soles. I'm also excited about Alex' use of instruments like the theremin in it. 'The theremin was used in movie soundtracks such as Miklós Rózsa's for Spellbound and The Lost Weekend and Bernard Herrmann's for The Day the Earth Stood Still’ (From Wikipedia). This really adds to the cinematic feel of this track. For this song and our next record, I've been exploring mythic archetypes and imagery, really hoping to instill a sense of the Joseph Campbell hero journey to our listeners. * In this song, I use a metaphor of a cliff. In mythology, the cliff can represent taking a leap of faith. The mountain imagery of this song is enhanced greatly by Alex's use of the theremin. To me, it sounds like wolves in a dark, foreboding echoing mountainous landscape. The leap of faith in this song is a leap from fear for the character, a leap away from all the bad things that have happened to her. The wolf has tended to be a symbol of danger, destruction and the predator in mythology, so this unique sound is very fitting. I do hope that this song helps people to feel the fear and do it anyways, as the saying goes."

While The Soles upcoming follow-up to their successful Broken Ghost EP (Chart topper on Canadian College radio) will be an organic "band" record, this song is the pinnacle of their experimentation along the way. A full band / alternate version of Bird on a Ladder may make the final cut of The Soles next record, but band did fall in love with Alex's version and are excited for it’s release.

Alex Mine created and mixed this version at his studio, Alex Mine Audio Arts.
Marc Meriläinen recorded the vocals Studio 299.
