ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Called “a timeless document of four Village folk veterans reuniting in their prime” by WFUV’s John Platt, The Village Dudes new cd, “Another Time And Place” brings together four leading singer-songwriters in Greenwich Village’s 1980s rennaissance, performing as a group:
--Frank Christian, lead guitarist for Nanci Griffith and Suzanne Vega, released 5 solo cds and is the lead guitarist heard on this recording;
--Jack Hardy, founder of the Fast Folk Music Magazine, released 22 solo recordings and was cited by the New York Times for “Having kept alive the neighborhood tradition of counterculture troubadours”;
--Rod MacDonald, co-founder of the Greenwich Village Folk Festival, has released 13 solo recordings and recently been named one of “Ten Greatest South Florida Folksingers Of All Time” (New Times);
--David Massengill, of whom Dave Van Ronk said “he takes the dull out of dulcimer,” has released six solo recordings and a collection of pocket-sized children’s books.
Their songs have been recorded by Joan Baez, The Roches, Griffith, Vega, Jonathan Edwards, Van Ronk, Shawn Colvin, and many other artists; and they have headlined and appeared in top US and international festivals, from Philadelphia, Winnipeg, Kerrville and Newport to Friuli (Italy), Edinburgh Fringe (Scotland) and Port Fairy (Australia), among others.
Inspired by the folk songwriters of the 1960s, the four artists met in Greenwich Village, singing together informally and sharing their writing in workshops that also included Vega, Colvin, Christine Lavin, John Gorka, Richard Shindell and other peers; their Fast Folk recordings are today in the Smithsonian Folkways collection.
As club and concert headliners, each had a successful solo career when they met in the studio in 2002 and 2003 to record. Jack Hardy died in 2011 and Frank Christian in 2012, and MacDonald and Massengill are still actively performing; MacDonald is a 2019 headliner at the Florida Folk Festival. Massengill’s work was recently included in the U. Of N. Carolina’s folk archives, which led to this first release of these historic sessions.
Recorded live in the round, Another Time And Place has the time-honored quality of real folk music, the sound of four longtime friends sharing their songs. We at Blue Flute Music hope you enjoy this fine cd.
