ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Dr. Larry Nickel says, "I love the CD cover image - a person standing on a mountain top while the sky opens with a beam of light. You may have heard of the Damascus Road experience - an epiphany that can change the direction of one's future. I've had a few of those seminal experiences."

In 1988 composer, Larry Nickel, nearly died from viral encephalitis. He emerged from a coma after fifteen days. Face to face with the brevity of life, Larry said, "I need to devote more time to composition and declare the love of God in my music." (He was a very busy teacher with 6 choirs, 3 concert bands and 2 jazz bands.) So, during a long convalescence, Larry wrote and arranged 20 pieces of choral music - which became "Songs My Father Taught Me" - recorded in 1990. His friend, Tony Funk, assembled a stellar group of singers for the project. The CD went on to sell many thousands of copies. Sales from the album were donated to a charity for mentally challenged people. Long story short - the choir went on to record another 12 CDs - raising close to a million dollars for the same charity. Nickel sang in the low bass section and contributed over one hundred compositions and arrangements.
