ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This is a double album. The first CD could be played on a car journey, the second (track 21 onwards) is for more concentrated listening. (The download/streaming version of this album has fewer tracks.)

Check out the sheer variety of the sound clips. The 24-page booklet has a description of each track, which ranges from a jazzy piece for beginners to Berio's challenging Sequenza VII; and the oboists - players from the US and Europe, virtuosi of the past (Léon Goossens) and the present (Nicholas Daniel).

There is also an article on the history of the oboe from Shakespeare's time to the present day; an interview with a reed maker; and a visit to an oboe factory. There are illustrations throughout.

The tracks are from CDs in the Oboe Classics catalogue and others, and there are details on following up particular pieces or players.

"These CDs illustrate perfectly the many qualities of this wonderfully expressive instrument." Jenny Agutter
