ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Thistle House is a Scottish dance band rewired for high voltage. Consisting of David Knight on fiddle, Dave Wiesler on piano, and Dan Emery on highland pipes, small pipes, and wooden flute, Thistle House is guaranteed to pump adrenaline into the most tired feet -- especially when the pipes start up! All three musicians are avid and accomplished Scottish country dancers as well as nationally recognized musicians, and this guarantees that the music they make will be danceable and exciting.

This CD is a live recording, capturing the energy of a live Scottish country dance. Many of the tracks feature compositions of the band members as alternate tunes in the dance medleys. Pipes are played in about half the tracks (1, 3, 6, 9, 11, and 14).

Fiddler David Knight has been instigating dance up and down the East Coast and beyond since 1991, primarily playing in the Scottish, American, and English dance traditions.  He is a member also of Scottish dance band Waverley Station and the contra dance bands Green Light Karma and Evil Twins. He is a prolific composer and has produced two collections of his original tunes – “Fleeting” (2000) and “The Art Of…” (2003) – both featuring waltzes, jigs, marches, airs, reels, and Strathspeys.

Pianist Dave Wiesler has been playing traditional Scottish music for dances and concerts since 1993 and has Scottish dance recordings also with fiddlers Hanneke Cassel and Mara Shea. Dave is at home in a huge range of other styles of music and folk dance, including contra dance, swing, vintage dancing, blues, Viennese waltz, and English country dance. He has played at festivals and dance and music camps across the country, as well as in Canada, Scotland, and England, and he appears on over a dozen recordings, many featuring his own compositions.

Piper Dan Emery has been piping since the 1980s and is one of the few pipers able to play pipes for Scottish country dance, which requires tempos and styling different from that of Scottish pipe bands. Dan has been the designated piper for numerous dance camps over the years, and in recent years has expanded his musical proficiency to small pipes, border pipes, wooden flute and, more recently, fiddle.
