Album Notes
I've been writing songs since I was 17 years old and I can still remember the wonder and excitement I felt when I put a melody and lyrics together for the first time. I have written over a hundred songs since then, but I still feel the same thrill every time I finish a song. It stems from the realization that I've created something new that didn't exist a moment before. Thanks for visiting and I hope you will check out my other songs.

Open Mic is my tribute to a wonderful musical sub-culture that exists all over the world. I have been playing at open mics for several years and I have never found a more accepting and welcoming audience (or hosts). Open mics are great opportunities for both novice and veteran musicians to just show up with a musical instrument and share their talent in a supportive environment.

Words & music by Thomas Itty

You can see us when the sun goes down
In cafes and bars in every town
With guitars, keys and amplifiers
Some of us have p-p-performance jitters
We love to sing, we love to play
But we haven’t made it yet
So we wait for a chance to shine
Two songs at a time
At the open mic
The open mic

We don’t get paid we don’t have it made
But we play our hearts out just the same
Some of us are young and some are old
If you love playing music you’re welcome to our fold
We’ve got jobs and obligations
But we find a way
To hang out with a drink and wait
Until we hit the stage
At the open mic
The open mic

Maybe we’re not ready for prime time yet
We sometimes start in the wrong key
And words we tend to forget
At the open mic
The open mic

Sometimes we wait for another round
But the list gets longer as the night goes on
So we chat with our friends and we cheer real loud
Until a text comes in saying, “When are you coming home?”
We’re all waiting for the day
When our name will be in lights
And everyone who’s watching us now
Will say, “Hey, I knew that guy”
“At the open mic.”
