Album Notes
Three decades into his extraordinary, multi-faceted recording career, Thom Rotella has a sure-fire way of knowing when he’s hit on the perfect groove: “When my foot starts tapping without me knowing it, I know we’re on the right track.” That instinctive tapping happens non-stop with the guitarist’s new single “Eddie’s Ready,” a joyful and infectious, retro-minded and bluesy soul-jazz romp. that marks the guitarist’s highly anticipated return to the smooth jazz fold after a decade exploring other vistas in the jazz realm. The single co-written with and produced by Chris Standring will be released for radio adds May 20.
Co-written and produced by veteran genre hit maker (and fellow guitar virtuoso) Chris Standring, the organ and brass laced track features longtime Standring band members Hans Zermulen (keys) and Andre Berry (bass), with horns arranged by Walter Murphy (“A Fifth of Beethoven,” “Family Guy”). The title “Eddie’s Ready” is a loving reference to legendary saxophonist Eddie Harris, a longtime hero of Rotella’s whose inimitable musical soul rings vibrantly throughout the song. Listen closely, and you’ll be able to hear some subtle, hidden musical quotes from Harris’ iconic “Freedom Jazz Dance” in the guitarist’s extended solo.
“Eddie’s Ready” is a welcome follow-up to Rotella’s recently released album Storyline, which hit #19 on the JazzWeek jazz chart. The idea for a new smooth jazz-oriented single came from Standring, who invited Rotella in October 2018 to be a guest and perform on his popular web TV show “The Inside Track.” Chris asked Rotella why he hadn’t continued to release music in the smooth jazz genre since his 2007 album A Day in the Life.
When Rotella explained that he made a conscious shift back towards his traditional jazz roots, Standring told him he should get back in the game. “Chris offered to write a song for me and produce it,” Rotella says. “I figured, what have I got to lose with a successful, talented guy running things. So I told him to go ahead. Two days later he sent me the original version of ‘Eddie’s Ready’, which blew me away. I couldn’t dial him back fast enough to say ‘Let’s do it, man.’ I subsequently wrote a bridge for the song and we were on our way. It’s been a dream collaboration. ‘Eddie’s Ready’ has a vibe that’s between traditional jazz, blues and the pop influences of smooth jazz, and that’s a great medium space for me.”
