ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid..."
(Early American Carol "The Shepherd's Star")

Named for a colonial route through central Virginia, Three Notch’d Road is the area’s only professional ensemble that performs a full season of early music on period instruments. Our musicianship is founded on a vigorous historical approach, offering little-known music of the baroque as well as incisive performances of well-known favorites.

Musicians:
Anne Timberlake, recorder
Fiona Hughes & David McCormick, baroque violin
Daniel Elyar, baroque violin & viola
Jeremy Ward, baroque cello (bass violin)
Jennifer Streeter, harpsichord

Inspiration:
For this album of Christmas music, Three Notch'd Road imagines the celebrations of Twelfth Night and draws on a rich heritage of early American carols and centuries of European musical tradition. From humble shepherds to the kings of the east, Christmastide has inspired diverse musical offerings, of which we perform a delightful sampling.

The Music:
We chose the shepherd's pastorale of Corelli's familiar "Christmas Concerto" in celebration of the 300th anniversary of its 1714 publication. A similarly Italianate work is G.A. Guido's musical exploration of winter's sounds and sensations for his French patrons, "L'Hyver" (Winter), a delightful and less frequently heard version than Vivaldi's.

For a thoroughly French Christmas, we turn to the Noël settings by organist Corrette. Using his instrumental renditions of sung French carols as a springboard, it's a short step to claiming other vocal music for our purposes as instrumentalists. M. Praetorius' famous 1609 chorale harmonization, "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" was also set as an exquisite four-part canon by his contemporary M. Vulpius. From the early baroque, we hear a harmonic texture in Praetorius' chorale settings that in its earthy, open intervals is surprisingly similar to many 18th- and 19th-century American carols. "Star in the East" and "The Shepherd's Star," from William Walker's Southern Harmony (1835) are often set to the same text. Inspired by the Boston Camerata's beautiful recordings we've set the old English carol "A Virgin Most Pure" in alternation with "A Virgin Unspotted."

Ever popular since Elizabethan times, the English tune "Greensleeves" is frequently given Christmas-themed lyrics, most popularly "What Child is This." In a virtuosic recorder version showcased here, this set of variations leads us from sacred carols into festive dances. As the Twelfth Day of Christmas draws to a close, Praetorius' delightful dances from Terpsichore are followed by those of the English composers Holborne and Playford.
