Album Notes
Mahadev is a chant to Shiva, the Destroyer, of the Hindu Trinity. Although Shiva is the destroyer and often associated with war and destruction, He is also a creator. Nothing new gets created unless the old passes away. As a metaphor of person growth this chant implies the destruction of stuff that is unneeded or getting in the way of our personal growth and progress. The wrath of Shiva as personified in Virabadra (the warrior) is the boundary setter, allowing us to know where others end and we begin. But Shiva is also the meditator allowing us to sink into a deep quiet state of being. This later presentation of Shiva is the one that is most represented in Madhuli Bhide's performance of this chant. She let me (Dennis Hawk) back her up in the piece. Thank you Madhuli.
