Album Notes
John Cassavetes, heralded as the father of independent film in America, was a writer, director and actor whose immediate and engrossing style of filmmaking captivated audiences and stirred controversy. Hagans writes about Cassavetes: "With each film, I feel I have been given access to a story that began long before the first frame and is presently continuing. I am an undetected visitor viewing actual events being lived by actual people, and from my voyeuristic involvement in the drama, I hear music."

Hagans chose characters from the directors' first six films. The final composition, John Cassavetes, is a musical evocation of Cassavetes himself. Hagans explains: "I decided to write music that describes the emotional life of the characters rather than compose episodic descriptions of events in the films. In these compositions, the interplay of instruments express the complexities of the palette of our internal conflicts, and the melodies personify our soaring emotions. Each character's musical theme is stated and then developed over the course of the movement, tracing the emotional arc experienced by the character in the film."
