From MainlyPiano
“Russian Dance” is Tim Neumark’s solo piano arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s piece for virtuoso violin and orchestra from his first ballet, “Swan Lake,” which was composed in 1875-76. Initially a failure, “Swan Lake” has become one of the most popular of all ballets. Of course a piano solo is going to sound different from a fully-orchestrated performance, but Neumark has certainly captured the spirit of the the “Russian Dance.” It begins slowly and almost mournfully, picking up speed in the middle as the mood lightens. Played in the upper registers of the piano, the third theme is slower and more poignant before it bursts into a swirling and effusive final section. As much fun to play as it is to listen to, Neumark’s arrangement is also available in sheet music.
