Album Notes
This recording, my debut as a composer and bandleader, attempts to document what’s been going on in clubs, concert halls, and classrooms in upstate New York and beyond over the last couple of decades. It’s a celebration of my love of all kinds of music, and all kinds of musicians. The tunes represent a wide range of styles and attitudes, but I would first and foremost describe my music as mainstream with an edge. I’ve enjoyed playing everything from cakewalks and ragtime numbers to free improv, but my heart lies with melody [still singable even if it’s a little jagged or asymmetrical], crunchy harmonies, and syncopated rhythms that groove in strongly identifiable ways. Pianists Horace Silver, Ramsey Lewis, Ahmad Jamal, Vince Guaraldi, and Bill Evans as well as vibraphonist Cal Tjader are musicians I would say have influenced me as composer, pianist, and bandleader. I was raised on Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Maynard Ferguson, but years of teaching “American Music”, “History of Jazz”, and “Music of Latin America” and running the Jazz Ensemble at Union College in Schenectady, NY, as well as trips to Cuba, Brazil, and South Africa, have exposed me to all kinds of great music, and I’ve sought to incorporate these sounds and ideas into my own works.
