ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
After the completion of my first album, I spent some time looking for inspiration for a follow up. I felt inspired to create a self contained concept album; something that had consistency and unity, an album with shared thematic material and lyrical imagery. Searching for inspiration I took to books, films and even television, looking for something to get the creative juices going.

To my own amazement I stumbled upon an idea while watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Lately I'd found myself preoccupied by the unsolved mysteries of the universe: what it means to exist, to be conscious and so forth. Listening to Carl Sagan talking about our place in the cosmos, accompanied by that haunting synthesizer score by Vangelis was enough to kick start the idea. I would create a cycle of songs looking at life through the lens of cosmology and existentialism. From that point onwards, lyrical ideas flowed freely. Although ultimately the only song directly influenced by Cosmos was Hypatia, which I got the idea for after hearing Sagan talking about the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

I had recorded a demo, "Let's Go Dreaming" (included on the fourth disc of this release) in 2011 while working on Toys. The tune never made it to my first album, but I really liked it and didn't want to discard it. I developed it further and employed it as the main recurring melodic theme for this new album, which I had already decided would be called My Place in the Universe. I've always been interested in reprising melodies across multiple songs; I believed it would help tie the songs together musically.

Once I had these basic elements laid out, inspiration for the music came easily. Sitting at the keyboard with these ideas helped me develop basic chord sequences and melodies very quickly. For the arrangements and production, I wanted to continue what I had started on Toys, and use a lot of blended sound. This time however, I attempted to create more dynamic musical moments, quiet pauses and breaks, with haunting distant sounds creeping in as if from the edge of reality. I made also made use of analogue synthesizer sounds; mostly as something of a nod towards Cosmos, though it's a texture I've enjoyed when used sparingly on some late 70s albums.

I wanted to include some instrumental collaborations on this album. Bertrand J. aka BeigeMusic (whom I discovered through SoundCloud) plays the lead guitar part on the instrumental track Nowhere. Los Angeles based guitarist Purposeful Porpoise plays the guitar solo on Lifestory. It was a thrill for me to have these talented musicians playing on my songs. I encourage you to head over to SoundCould and check out their work!

So, that's the condensed story of the creation of this album. I had a blast working on it. Working within the structure of the concept and thematic material, in a lot of ways, lead the album to write itself after a certain point. I just created the framework, from that point the songs took off in their own direction.

I hope you enjoy the album!

Tim.
