Album Notes
“Troglograss” is a virtual underground Bluegrass band, like Alan Jackson stuck in a cave with the Sam Bush Band. Tight playing with a big voice that rocks the grass off the hill tops. Tim Sublette’s writing mixes old school bluegrass traditions with “not quite grass” jazz and contemporary flavor. Music raised in the cave country of the Missouri Ozarks and played by some of the finest Midwest acoustic musicians. Tim has brought together national champion pickers with a selection of Kansas City’s best Jazz and classical musicians to tell this true story of Ozark history. It is the hope that through this music the old legends, people and places can be passed along to other generations just as fiddle tunes were passed along one generation to the next. So sit back, close your eyes and let the ears take you on a journey along the bluffs, caves and waterways of the Missouri Ozarks. Here lives the story of Cotton’s Cave.
Troglograss is comprised of cavemen (and cavewoman): James Albright (ac. Bass, vocal arr., harmony vocal) you will hear in holding down the bottom of the rhythm section in the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra or perhaps in the Northland Symphony when not gigging with any number of Kansas City’s Club bands. Daylight hours are often spent teaching at William Jewel College or working in the studio. Ann Brock (harmony vocal) is a veteran of many of the Midwest Country Opry shows and fronts the wonderful group Fresh Cut Grass with her husband. Much of Ann’s time is spent taking care of business with the St. Joseph Symphony. Terry Brock (violin) has busy days teaching in the St. Joseph school system however in the evenings you might catch him playing at the St. Joseph Symphony, an Opry Show, sharing the stage in Fresh Cut Grass or playing fiddle for any of Kansas City’s finest Country acts. Ray DeMarchi (drums, perc ) I first met when he was directing the Eight O’Clock Band at Johnson County Community College however I might have just as likely have encountered him teaching at U.M.K.C. or William Jewel. You may have heard Ray performing at Kansas City’s Starlight Theater, Lyric Opera or any number of Jazz venues in Kansas City. Bruce Graybill (mandolin) is a 2 time first place winner in the mandolin contest at the National Flat-pick Championships. Bruce can be heard playing with his jazz group Hot Strings or in a number of other string groups in the K.C. area. He is an endorsing artist for Weber mandolin, past president of the Classical Mandolin Society of America and has 2 solo C.D.’s out. Kirk Lee (lead vocal, banjo) may be found behind any instrument with strings it all played with truth and passion for the instrument and the music. Kirk may be heard playing guitar for the Bluegrass Tornado’s , a duo with his talented wife Mary or the old time string band Uncle ‘backie Juice. Kirk is also an alumni of Fresh Cut Grass and has a solo C.D. “Covey Rise”. Joe Payne (steel string guitar, guitar solo ) has been living in New York for the better part of a decade working as the guitarist for the Broadway Production of Jersey Boys. Joe is also no stranger to the winners circle of the National Flat-pick Championships and is also an alumni of Fresh Cut Grass. Tim Sublette (prod.,music, lyric, arrangement, nylon and steel string guitars) is owner and head instructor at Smithville Music Studio, north of Kansas City. He worked in various country and cover groups over the years including sharing the stage at times with the Bluegrass Tornados and Fresh Cut Grass. Tim formerly arranged music for the Boston Arts Council , taught in the Boston area including Northeastern University. Tim has one solo C.D. “Minor Details” and the single “Don’t Know” both available on C.D. Baby and other locations. Recorded and engineered by Albright Productions, Liberty Mo.
