Perhaps jazz records account for only
three percent of sales, but the genre is awash with talent. Let's add Tina to the list.
She's come up with a flawless 12-track album which covers
songs written by such diverse composers as Thelonious Monk and the Gershwin brothers, not to mention one of her own.
Her voice is as immaculate as her control of it - one minute she's scatting, the next giving a ballad her own special treatment.
She tackles Monk's Straight No chaser, a difficult number for a vocalist, with the aplomb of a long-time pro - singing the words and scatting to Art Landes' excellent Monk impression of SNC.
She does the same with Blue Monk but one of the outstanding tracks - and it's difficult to pick one - is her delicious version of Black Orpheus.
Tina is a real find and afficionados of the idiom should make this a must disc to add to their collection. Outstandingly good.

CD Featuring Art Lande, Paul Warburton, Chris Lee and
Tina Phillips
A talented Jazz singer equally at home interpreting ballads as she is scatting...(she)pays tribute to the tradition while adding something very personal of her own. Her lovely voijce is quite appealing and accessible...(she)obviously has a great future
