Album Notes
Award-winning Acoustic fingerpicking blues guitarist. Without a doubt one of the very finest acoustic blues musicians alive today, this outstanding musician won the best performer in all categories at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. From the opening bars of his high-energy Piedmont style, it is easy to see why: Toby is a true master of this American music idiom.

" Every time you think you've heard it all in the acoustic finger-style blues world, you sometimes get surprised. And this latest CD by Toby Walker, "HAND PICKED", is just that surprise.

And then some.

Toby really pushes the envelope on this latest effort. Lightening fast licks and soulful runs take the listener into uncharted territory. From the driving rhythms of the opening track "Big Meat Shakin' On The Bone" to it's moving finale "The Secret", these cuts are truly 'hand picked' from a bountiful garden.

And just in case you're not familiar with the versatility of Toby Walker, you'll get a fine showcase on this CD. From wonderful new original tunes ("Little Dixie", "Generosity Rag", and others) to covers that make you wonder why they weren't done this way originally ("Mind Your Own Business", "Hard Times Killing Floor" come to mind), this new effort will be on your disc player for a long time.
On some tracks you'll also get tasty licks by fiddle player Jay Ungar, stand up bass by Molly Mason and Tom Griffith, and Martha Trachtenberg's haunting harmonies.
All the right ingredients in just the right amounts help make this 'ear candy' in the finest sense of the phrase.
Lyrically and musically, the listener gets taken on a beautiful ride through an incredibly lush musical landscape.
"Hand Picked". Couldn't be said or played better."

This Toby Walker CD is even better than the last, which is hard to believe! Whether you like hot licks, soulful tunes or straight-to-the-heart energy, this CD has it!
This is an INCREDIBLE CD. The rating scale should be moved up to 10 STARS for this project alone. THANKS, TOBY! GREAT STUFF! ALREADY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE!

I have all of Toby Walker's CD's and they just keep getting better and better. When I play one for someone I'm always careful to tell them that they are listening to a recording of a single artist that was made all at once. There's no multitrack over dubbing going on. Toby would sound the same if he were playing in your living room. Amazing!

This is my third Toby Walker CD and this guy just gets blusier, funnier and (if it's possible) picks better each time!! Toby's original blues tunes come from a deep wellspring of roots blues knowledge and emotion. From the absurd to the sublime, Toby takes your hand (and ears) and leads you to places wonderful and insightful. FIVE BIG STARS FOR TOBY!

What a great album! I have all his CD's and just when I think I have a favorite, he comes out with a fabulous new one! This one has great variety -- everything you'd expect from a Toby Walker CD, from virtuosic guitar technique and passionate vocal presentation with gutsy delivery, to introspective moments that reflect his skill as a songwriter. Everything about this album -- including its design and photography -- is professional. I give it a BIG TEN!!! If you are a Toby Walker fan, you MUST have this album. If you don't yet know Toby, this album will make you a believer!

Aficionados of great acoustic guitar fingerpicking, if you’re not familiar with Toby Walker (Little Toby Walker), you’re in for a treat. Toby’s newest album, Hand Picked, again showcases his superb and innovative guitar (including wonderful slide guitar). Toby shows us his skill and feeling for interpreting not only traditional blues, but also country blues, as well as his ability to write poignant poetic lines mirrored by a beautiful melody, as in his song, The Secret. And, by the way, he ain’t a bad singer either. Believe me, it’s not just Toby’s technical skill (which will amaze you), but something more resonant: he chooses the right note and gives it life. I promise, you’ll be taken aback by Toby’s guitar playing, and will quickly grab a few more of his albums. And you might just pick up a lick or two yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
