Album Notes
Todd Beaney is a pianist, composer, arranger, and teacher in the New York metropolitan area. He and violinist Yoshiko Maruyama play together regularly at Wilton Baptist Church (in Connecticut), and conceived this project out of a desire to share their very fresh, expressive approach to instrumental music for worship.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Todd enjoys applying his jazz-influenced arranging skills to the canon of Christian hymns as well as to contemporary worship songs. Amid the variety of styles represented on this recording, there is something for everyone!

Surprisingly inventive, beautifully expressive songs of worship.
Todd Beaney gives each selection on Higher Ground its own unique musical treatment that gives surprising expression to the meaning of these old hymns and new worship songs. The arranger conveys the beauty, majesty, joy, and reverence of these songs with great imagination and inventiveness. Listen and be lifted up.

Clever juxtapositions inspire and enrich
Pianist/arranger Todd Beaney's severe visage on the inside cover does not presage the warmth his arrangements evoke. In ten succinct statements of faith through music, Beaney and violinist Yoshiko Maruyama reinvigorate classic and contemporary hymns through subtle arrangements and sparkling juxtapositions. Maruyama's throaty violin tone reminds one of a mature cabernet sauvignon matched with chateaubriand. Beaney is both an active pianist at Wilton Baptist Church (CN) and a graduate of the jazz writing program at the prestigious Eastman School of Music, and he brings all his experience to the table on this CD. He lavishes his arrangements with improvisational freeness while never straying uncomfortably from the hymns at hand. O My Soul, Bless God the Father practically swings! For meditation, for worship, for inspiration -- this CD by Beaney and Maruyama is a gem. Rumor has it that Beaney has a raft of unrecorded arrangements that are played in churches across the U.S. by his dedicated followers—let’s hope he gets back into the studio soon to record them.

Superb and inspiring
Higher Ground will lift you up and get you going no matter what is going on in the background of your life. The arrangements have energy and the musicianship and artistry of the players exhibit both excellence and spirit. Highly recommended.
