Surprised by Beauty

by Tom Bajoras

Instrumental music of breathtaking beauty, featuring piano, violin, flute, and cello. Born out of a period of great suffering in the composer's life, these haunting melodies take the listener on a journey from pain and sorrow to exuberant joy.

Album Notes
I love making beautiful things, and I love making things beautiful. Nothing else brings me more joy.

But what is "beauty?" Surely it is not a coincidence that all human languages have a word for beauty. If we all have a word for beauty, then beauty must exist apart from us—like oceans, deserts, space, and time. Even if we can't explain it, it is there, so we need a word for it.

My earliest memory, from when I was only three years old, is of an encounter with beauty. In this memory, I am in a church. The visual details are a blur, but what is clear is the sound of the organ and choir, swirling around me and transporting me to another realm. Soon afterward I began writing music, trying to feel again what I had felt in that church.

Many years later my music is still primarily about encountering beauty. Such encounters can be quite terrifying, but they can also be deeply healing. People have often said my music has a healing power. I don't doubt it, although I never consciously strive for that. But I do believe where there is beauty, there is also healing.

My greatest hope for my music is that you will find it beautiful.

S.B.B. is a sleeper, a gem!
There are so many beautiful melodies in this album, that I would lose count if I tried to count them all. But maybe what i love most is how the strings play with the piano in a playful way on this album throughout it's entirety. It seems almost improvised.

I love how this record brings up so many visuals for me. The music is not only executed excellently technically, but there's a sort of vibe to the record that arises early on and stays. It makes me want to go spend time in nature. Love it!

Beautiful Salve to the Soul!
There’s plenty of a lot of heartbreak, pain, brokenness, and frustration in this world. Music can be both a salve to the soul and a way to deeply express the pains and beauties of this life. Tom encapsulates this in his newest album of original music. I highly recommend folks to listen and experience Tom's music as a piece of art.

Relaxing and Refreshing
This is a beautiful, relaxing, refreshing CD of instrumental music. Obviously the composer plays from the heart, to create an authentic and moving experience.
