Album Notes
...Wildfires in the hills and canyons of Los Angeles, radio ghosts, the road, redemption, Elvis, the moon, Robert Johnson, small town New England life and of course, love and all of its entanglements. These are the themes one can expect from this well traveled, seasoned songwriter and his prolific song writing partner, lyricist George Wardwell.

A member of the Atlantic Records folk-rock group Devonsquare for more than 27 years and now a powerful solo artist, Tom possesses the perfect voice and guitar style to bring his character rich songs to life in an intimate performance setting. ..Tom is a veteran of the singer songwriter scene. The list of artists he has shared the stage and recorded with looks like a who's who of the music business. (Bonnie Raitt, Joan Armatrading, Steven Stills, Suzanne Vega - just to name a few) He has toured constantly for the last 15 years as a singer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist and sometimes producer for the successful folk-rock trio, Atlantic Records recording artists... Devonsquare. With songs like "Walking On Ice", "Straightaway", "If You Could See Me Now" and many more, his voice, guitar, songs and arrangements were instrumental in shaping that classic Devonsquare sound.

..Tom's 1999 album "Your Own Backyard" distinguishes him as a premier songwriter and singer. With the help of longtime friend and producer Peter Gallway, Tom has put together a moving collection of songs and a stellar backing band with such notables as Shawn Pelton on drums (Shawn Colvin) Jeff Pevar on guitar (CPR, Rickie Lee Jones, Donald Fagen) and Michael Viscegliaon bass (Suzanne Vega).

Indie Review

..Tom Dean is the folk musician's folk musician. He writes and produces his own stuff, He has played with Bonnie Raitt, Joan Armatrading, Steven Stills, and Suzanne Vega. He has toured for the past 15 years, and is a member of Atlantic Records' folk-rock trio, Devonsquare. It's the same skills that he brings to all the other venues that you'll find all over the place in "Your Own Backyard." And that's what makes it one of my top choices for male folk album in my vast CD collection.

Why isn't this guy more well known?
I first heard Walking On Ice years ago while driving in my car but the station did not name the artist. This led to years of searching for it until the internet came along and it became easier to trace artists. I love Tom Dean and can't figure out why he was never a bigger star. He is a genius. Great songwriter, great player, and his production is perfect. I love playing this CD for folks who have never heard it and watching them flip out....

CD is on repeat - during any light of day...
I borrowed this CD from a friend & the calls started coming in, "that CD you borrowed? Can I have it back?" I kept saying, "yeah, yeah..." but it always stayed right in my player on repeat. This CD is a MUST OWN - you'll be listening as the sun starts peeking through the trees and when the moon is on your doorstep...hit play!

He's simply one of the finest singer-songwriter-musicians walking this planet
The first thing that stands out about this album as you listen to the first cut, is the pristine quality and non-linear separation of every single sound. Then once you bring your jaw up from the floor, you begin to dig the groove of the prominent bass line and "boom-chucka" snare beat. This is prime for radio. What an incredible production.

Kind of starts out like Bonnie Raitt's, "Papa Come Quick" but that's where the similarities end. The intentionally monotonous melody drones continuously like tires rolling along the freeway at 80 miles an hour. A nice compliment to the lyrical intent. "Walking On Ice" There is a certain Guy Clark-meets-Phil Collins influence at work here. It lingers in the's infectious. The subtle, seemingly transparent touches laced within this cut is nothing short of brilliance at work. My kudos to the chef.

"Love Is Always Gonna Look Just Like You" pop sensibility with the heart of a folk lyric to keep it grounded. The musicianship is about as professional, tight and creative as you'll ever hear. "Your Own Backyard" The intro reminds me of Gordon Lightfoot's, "Sundown". This kind of seductively drags itself like a peacock during mating season. Feel the electricity........feel the heat. Put this over the loudspeakers and the floor will be filled to capacity with dirty dancing, guaranteed.

"My Little Wildcat" Now we hit the bluesy side with this little number. It's a sassy one sprinkled with sultry intentions. Watch out, boys and girls. This will move you. "She's Just A Girl" A romantic ballad oozing with sensitive, laid-back instrumentation. Tom uses this original to flaunt his recitation skills. Groovy.

"The Devil and Robert Johnson" Pounding kick and monster accents bring this song into cult status. It's got an eerie and dangerous beat meant to satisfy that risk-taking side hiding inside of us all. Are you ready to face it?

"After Midnight" Mixing the sweet salvational buzz of the Hammond organ with Tom's mellow vocals almost gives this tune a gospel-like implication. REPEAT.......REPEAT........REPEAT. "The First Time I Saw Mary", is a pretty song. Simple. Beautiful. Strikingly similar to the stylings of Paul Simon and just as poignant in the interpretation. Touching.

The Summary

He's simply one of the finest singer-songwriter-musicians, walking this planet today. His music is exciting, mystical, haunting, impassioned, subliminal. This has to be one of the best independent albums to come out this year. Having never been previously introduced to Tom's music, I have now become a convert. I have missed this kind of sound for quite some time. It seemed to have faded with the Simon and Garfunkel era.......that well-produced sound with intelligent lyrics can be found with this project. If you love music for the quality of the sound and the depth of the songwriting, this is the album to have.

Great cd! I love it
I have been looking for this cd for years. I couldn't believe it when I finally saw it. I love the song love is always going to look just like you. I heard it on the radio years ago and have been looking for it every since. Very fast delivery service. I was amazed and pleasantly surprised. I also loved the thank you for ordering e-mail that I recieved. Funny and different than the usual. Again thank you very much. It is a much played cd!

This is a gorgeous sounding CD. Every song is a keeper. The whole CD just shines. I can't stop listening to it. Found my way to Tom Dean through Jeff Pevar, whose guitars and mandolin are heard on almost all the cuts. I'm so happy to have this CD and hope many more people will hear it too! The word for this music is Beautiful. Vocally I hear the Crosby/Nash influence as well as shades of Kenny Rankin and Shawn Colvin--some of my favorite singers--all in Tom Dean's vocals here, but obviously he's a unique voice and songwriter. I'd love to catch him live sometime and will buy any future CDs he puts out.
