by Tom Garling

The second release of my "Electrombonica" project. This one was inspired by great acoustical wonderlands: huge cathedrals, caverns, and lakes on calm evenings where the water is like glass. The calming effect of playing in these settings has always drawn me.

Album Notes
In my tours abroad, I was drawn to big cathedrals, and their amazing construction, as well as their acoustic properties. One day on a gig with Maynard Ferguson in Europe (Italy, I think), it was an outdoor gig, and right behind the stage was a very large cathedral. The doors were made of solid wood, thick and heavy, and stood twice as high as me. The iron door handles were huge, and were obviously hand made before America was discovered. Looking for a place to warm up, I grabbed the handle and pulled. The door was so heavy I had a hard time moving it, but to my surprise, it was unlocked. The cathedral was empty and dark and huge inside. I had never heard such incredible echoes coming from the notes I was playing in there, reverberating off the walls and ceiling. I started stacking notes and creating chords, and I was hooked! In later years, I have played my trombone in caves, and across large lakes with the sound coming back off the the trees. Once, on a large lake in Northern Wisconsin, I timed the echo at 20 seconds!!! The water was like glass, and the sound just went forever!

"Spatial" is an attempt to create that type of atmosphere.
