ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
John Ireland (1879-1962) was an English composer who studied with Charles Stanford and later taught composers like Benjamin Britten at the Royal College of Music. He has become known as an ‘English impressionist’ but his personal musical style drew on many sources. Ireland was very fond of the Channel Islands; The Island Spell was written in Jersey in 1912 and Sarnia, one of Ireland’s most significant piano works, was written in Guernsey in 1940. Sarnia is the Roman name for the island. Ireland was evacuated in 1940 shortly before Guernsey was occupied by German forces.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) wrote The Seasons in response to a commission from Nikolay Bernard, editor of The Nouvellist magazine. Bernard promised his readers a new piece by Tchaikovsky for each month of 1876. These are masterpieces in miniature and Tchaikovsky’s distinctive style is audible in all of them. The lyrical movements sound like arias lifted straight from one of Tchaikovsky’s operas while the dance movements are very balletic in nature. Throughout, the pianist senses that Tchaikovsky is thinking in orchestral terms and we enjoy the same sweeping melodies that can be heard in his symphonies.
