ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
These songs are for the spirit. On this album that means sometimes using explicit religious and Biblical language, and sometimes not. It means there are many ways other than "father" to talk about God. It means that God is alive in the details, and is worth a good party now and then. It means the earth, celebration and struggles, fun and tears. Some of these songs have new words for old tunes. Some are exuberant, some reflective. Some fit into worship. Some invite more stories and discussion so the songs will keep growing. Each is an effort to sing a wandering kind of spirit that wonders, asks questions, listens, argues, takes stands, and grows. Each also reflects the belief that love really does heal -- not by making everything "all better" or even "okay" but by being present to comfort and embrace, challenge and change. I hope these songs are as comforting and as challenging as love and healing often are.

Special thanks to Dirk Damonte for his wonderful arrangements, piano playing, and support; to Gwen, as the "loyal opposition," for the conversations that pushed these songs to make more sense; to Aeden and Irene for being able to watch their musical skills grow and who (with Gwen) made several of these songs a family project; to Marilyn McClellan and the Folk Choir for helping some of these songs grow up and for making the singing of them so much fun; and to all who inspire the kind of wondering and wrestling that make faith and songs as lively and as freeing as possible.
