Album Notes
“In all the workshops I’ve done for teachers, parents, and administrators, I’ve learned that it’s essential for us to nourish the lives of the adults who work with our children. I hope these songs do that. They come with thanks to...
‘all the folks who trust the children
and who listen well
for all the bits and pieces of the
stories kids can tell'”

Tom wrote the words above in 1990 when we made “Bits & Pieces” as a tape, and they’re more true now than ever. Our culture’s headlong dash toward measurable outcomes and test scores as the way to tell how well we’re teaching and learning gives only a small picture of what good education is about. It’s also draining for a lot of teachers who know much more than any test can tell about how well their students are doing. Nourishing the hearts of teachers is essential for kids to learn well. We hope these songs help. They’ve been through several evolutions over the years and the sound isn’t perfect. We wanted to make them available on CD anyway and decided to leave them as is. Some of them have “warts,” but they have heart too. We hope that’s what comes through.
